Samsung TX-R3079WH 30" Wide SlimFit HDTV with Built-In HD Tuner

poor manual some frustration but AWESOME RECEPTION & CLARITY!4

While I love gadgets I'm not into spending tons of money on televisions. I frankly don't watch TV as much as I did in my teens and as long as I can see everything without snow I figured I didn't need anything too fancy. I was content with the 32" Sony CRT I had for the past 8 years until it went off to be with the Lord.

I went to some local super centers to look at their offerings - it's nice to have lots of TVs in a certain price range all playing the same loop side by side so you can compare color depth along the entire gamut as well as refresh rates intensity glare etc.

I had heard that HDTV was the next wave of the future and since I expect a TV to last at least 10 years (or until it gives up the ghost) I didn't want to be left in the technological dust regretting my purchase so I compared prices and quality and this Samsung SlimFit was the hands-down winner - NO CONTEST.

The clarity in HD is stellar and in regular non DTV mode it's no slouch either... but if you're used to a regular analog (non digital) TV you will notice lower quality on analog channels. Why is this? A typical analog CRT set has about 300 lines of phosphors top to bottom. The HDTV has 1080 lines - so it has to take the 300 lackluster analog lines and basically triple the info - so it looks ok but underwhelming if you are switching from a nice expensive analog TV.

I asked tons of questions at the big box retailer to make sure that if and when I got this home I wouldn't be coming back with an AK-47 if my reception did not match what they had in the store.

I live in a town of about 90000 people and while we have digital cable we do not have HDTV available via cable. The big box retailer is stuck in the same town and they assured me they were not getting a satellite feed.

When the delivery men came with my TV and set it up I was underwhelmed. The reception was worse than on the dead TV when it was still living. I went back to the store and talked to the salesman who filled me in on some great information.

With HDTV over the air if you get as much as 51% of the signal you get the whole thing... so I got some RCA HDTV-ready rabbit ears and voila - I get local HDTV streams for free over the airwaves from Dallas and it is so stunning I've caught myself frozen on the carpet standing and staring at vacuum commercials. The depth the clarity - mind blowing.

I have an old DVD player - about 7 years old and it does not have progressive scan but a fairly new DVD "The Bourne Identity" looks freakin' awesome on this TV even w/o the progressive scan. The better option from progressive scan is the up-conversion which gives even more of a clarity booster.

The TV has it's own equivalent of an A/B/C/D/E switch via remote so when you want to switch from Playstation to DVD to TV to PVR you don't have to keep hopping out of your seat and flipping a switch. Three cheers for couch potatoes!

My less than stellar review is for the following reasons:

1.) The directions are incomplete. I have a PVR/DVR and while I had everything flawlessly hooked up with my previous TV myself even the "specialists" that set up my TV didn't know what to do. I had a committee meeting of sorts with the guys at the big box retailer until after about 30 minutes one of them came up with the solution that was not provided in the manual.

2.) If you've pointed your antenna toward the transmitter in your town for DTV signals sometimes you'll get all but one of them and one will fade in at out - but will have brain freeze while you try to change channels while it tries to decide if it's getting a signal or not. It is MADDENING!

3.) You can add/delete channels but not the HD sub channels (ie 4-1 5-1 5-2 etc.) so if it doesn't get it by auto scan you have to keep fiddling with the antenna and pray and auto search the entire spectrum over and over again. This drove me freakin' crazy and everyone at Samsung should have their fannies smacked for this.

4.) The warranty sucks unless you get an extended warranty which I did. It's covered for a year but the set weighs over 200lbs and you have to pay to ship it to Samsung w/ the 1 yr warranty! Then they decide if it's covered or not. Even if it's covered by the warranty you still have to pay to ship it back. It's crazy! I paid the big box retailer a couple of Benjamins for a 4 year warranty that not only quadruples the warranty but also means that if it croaks the big box retailer comes to my house and hauls it off at no charge and they take care of everything through Samsung for me. If I never need the warranty my daily cost of ownership over 4 years is pennies a day - but if I ever do need to make use of the warranty it's worth its weight in freakin' gold.

The friends and family that have come over to visit have had their jaws drop on the clarity of this TV and are all coveting one themselves. I looked at HDTVs for 3 months before settling on this one and despite the shortcomings cited above this is the best one you can get for the price. The next step up is going to get you in the big-time 4-5 digit range to get a DLP - which in comparison makes my own awesome set look like doggy doo... which is hard to fathom being possible until you see a Samsung DLP in person - it's enough to induce convulsive sobbing from the sheer emotional joy your eyes experience... but until I hit the Lotto this 30" SlimFit is going to do the job quite nicely.More detail ...

Sony KV-32FS120 32-Inch FD Trinitron WEGA Flat-Screen CRT TV

Great value picture.5

I have a Sony 51 inch high-definition tv also but a couple of years ago I saw this tv at a friends house hooked up to cable. The picture was amazing. Yesterday we bought one for our den and hooked up to DISH network (satelite) the picture is also the best I've ever seen for a tube tv. Plus it's easy to use and set up and has a feature called CLEAR EDGE that makes the picture even sharper. The only knock is the weight about 180 pounds. You need two people to move this tv it is heavy. But heavy usually means quality and this tv is the best on the market in this price range.More detail ...

Sony KV 32FS100 - 32" WEGA CRT TV - silver

The Best 32" TV without going HDTV or Plasma5

Okay - first of all I don't know I'd buy the TV from an on-line retailer because the sucker weighs 170 pounds (yeah that's right ONE-SEVEN-ZERO). You better like wherever the heck you install it unless you're superman - moving it is going to be like throwing your brother around the room...

But once you get it where you want it - the picture the sound and the display are all pure SONY and excellent. I looked at alot of different 32" TV's before I bought this one. And yeah - with Sony you pay for the SONY brand-name... but this TV is actually quite a bargain compared with others. In terms of picture quality it is quite nice (I mean without being HDTV - which is really unbelievably good). The "pan-and-scan" widescreen and the 16:9 compression are kind of neat features... If you watch alot of widescreen DVD's this is a nice feature. Personally I don't get all that bent out of shape by letterbox... but I know many do.

I have SONY primarily as my audio/video... so it integrates well with older SONY stuff. The box is big - 35 inches as I recall (the measurements are in the descript). It fills up an entertainment center nicely. I would really make sure that your entertainment center is rated for the weight. If you are using some "put together" furniture (usually made out of MDF or pressboard) it is going to collapse under the TV's weight. SONY makes a nice stand for this TV (I don't have it - but I've seen it)... you might want that stand.

When compared with Phillips(both the 4/3 and the widescreen) Toshiba and JVC - this is probably the best in class. It looks great with Digital Cable (I have Comcast) and the component inputs are slick... makes the colors and the sharpness very vivid. SONY has a "digital enhancer" mode for various types of media (film cable etc.) I don't know if that really does much - seems to me to add artifacts to the screen so I don't use it... I leave it on VIVID myself...

Anyways... you won't be disappointed for the bucks....More detail ...

Sony KD32FS170 32-Inch Trinitron WEGA Hi-Scan Digital Television

Excellent Sony 32 inch Stereo Color TV5

Have you been shopping lately? Standard 4:3 screen aspect ratio CRT Television sets are becoming a thing of the past. One major audio/video retailer in my area no longer carries standard CRT TV sets. They only carry 16:9 (screen aspect ratio) LCD and Plasma sets! I find this sudden transition unbelievable. I prefer a large 4:3 CRT screen. For me they are much brighter and more vivid. The Sony KD32FS170 32" Trinitron WEGA Hi-Scan Digital Television is an excellent 4:3 set. It has a Digital 3-line comb filter that increases picture resolution and reduces noticeable dot-crawl which is visible on less expensive 32-inch brands. It has Rear audio and composite video inputs as well as an S-video input for DVD Laser Disc players and Super-VHS recorders for higher picture resolution. The picture on this TV set is excellent.More detail ...

Samsung 30-inch Widescreen Slimfit CRT HDTV

A Great Bargain- as far as I know5

Now before any electronics enthusiasts jump in with "you could have gotten a better deal here with this thing and that thing and blah blah blah" I don't care. I bought this TV and I am extremely happy with it. On with the review.

First: SLIMFIT says it all. The dimensions make it practical and sleek-looking. If you're like me with a DVD player a PS3 a VCR and a cable box to plug in you know how much of a pain it can be to get around a big bulky OLD CRT TV to get the cables from point A to B (and C and D and E etc.). With this TV's slim design it is 1. lighter and therefor easier to move around if needed and 2. slimmer so that depending upon the space you're working with you can just walk right around it like I can.

Second: HDTV + CRT. Thank god. If you've gone into any Best Buy or other major electronics store you have undoubtedly seen the massive walls of plasma/LCD televisions playing insanely high-res videos. Don't be fooled. These are High Definition feeds NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF YOUR BASIC CABLE CHANNELS. Make sure you ask to see what a non-HD channel looks like one them because - believe me - it is NO GOOD. The majority of regular cable (Comcast for example) providers do not have many HD channels UNLESS you are buying a premium package. Even then the channels you already have are not improved to HD standards; you're just getting new channels (mostly sports-related channels) which are HD quality. With this TV you get the benefits of HD capabilities AND the benefit of seeing regular (non-HD) cable channels as you already do if not slightly better.

Third: PRICE. When I bought this TV I paid roughly 600 for it from Amazon. For 400 it is now an absolute steal. Especially compared to the price tags you see on other LCD/Plasma TVs- $1000+? Forget about it.

I think that's about all I have to offer here. As for negatives? I haven't found any. I mean I really haven't. Again I'm no up-to-the-minute electronics enthusiast. I'm just a regular guy who likes to watch a little TV a few blu-ray or DVDs now and then and play my PS3.

Keep this TV in mind.More detail ...

Sony KV-30HS420 30-Inch FD Trinitron WEGA HD-Ready Widescreen CRT TV

Widescreen high-definition TV at an affordable price5

Contrary to popular opinion you don't have to buy an expensive plasma or LCD (liquid crystal display) TV to get a great high-definition picure. In fact many experts (including Consumer Reports) assert that high-definition TVs using traditional cathode-ray tube technology -- as this high-definition Sony does -- currently offer a sharper picture than plasma and LCD TVs plus they are much less expensive and more reliable. This widescreen HD Sony TV has a very good picture with standard broadcasts and an outstanding picture with HD broadcasts and DVDs. If you'd like to get a widescreen high-definition TV now but your budget is limited to a thousand dollars or so please consider this 30" Sony.More detail ...
